Five Qualities of a Great Surrogate Mother

Gestational surrogacy is an excellent opportunity for women who want to help couples build their families. Surrogacy matches admirable women with deserving future parents, whether they need a surrogate due to infertility or because they are a same-sex couple.

If you’re interested in becoming a gestational surrogate, you’ll hear a lot about the requirements such as age, body mass index (BMI), living situation, and overall health, but something you may not hear a lot about is the type of person who is a good fit for surrogacy. We’ve outlined five of the best qualities in a surrogate mother below.

1. She genuinely enjoys pregnancy.
Not every woman enjoys being pregnant. Surrogates are compensated for their time and effort, but to be able to embrace and celebrate the pregnancy is important, both for the surrogate mother and the parents.
2. She volunteers in the community.
The ideal surrogate mother is someone who enjoys helping others, even if it means sacrificing the time and energy to do so. We see women who volunteer as those who are genuinely interested in helping others.
3. She has empathy for others.
Much of the motivation to become a surrogate mother stems from the empathy a woman feels for a struggling couple. Surrogates understand the desire to build a family, and they also understand they are helping someone else fulfill that dream. They may not be able to fully understand the pain or stress of needing to rely on someone else to carry the baby, but they want to help in a significant way.
4. She is generous.
A surrogate mother is generous, even though she is being paid to be a surrogate. Pregnancy, even for those who sincerely love those nine months, is a process. There are physical and emotional ups and downs. Surrogates understand this and move forward with the decision to use her entire being to help someone else anyway.
5. She has a solid support system.
Whether from a partner, friends, or family, surrogate mothers will need a committed support system before, during and after their pregnancy. Not only does this help with appointments and delivery, but it helps keep the surrogate emotionally healthy and positive.
